If there is one cuisine that is sadly underrepresented in our foodie city of Pune, it’s Mexican. Thankfully, Puneites finally have an eatery serving Mexican food at affordable prices – Picantos Mexican Grill brings the flavours of Central America to our table.
Ambience
Two words describe the décor – simple and refreshing. Mango-coloured walls and spacious seating make this not-very-large space comfortable. The walls are lined with large-sized, creative food shots of Mexican dishes and they have two sombreros thrown in for good measure. In fact, you’ll often see people putting these on and clicking photos with them!
Food + Drinks
The menu is quintessentially Mexican, though limited for now. Co-owners Shruti Agarwal and Uma Badve have kept it so in order to expand easily across the city. Tacos, burritos, quesadillas, rice bowls and salads along with desserts is what the menu boasts of. Surprisingly, the non-vegetarian dishes are all chicken, except for the Chilli Corn Carne Burrito, which includes lamb mince.
The most popular choices include Grilled Veg Tacos, Veggie Quesadillas and Barbeque Chicken Burrito. Our favourite of the lot are the Tacos, since they’re perfectly spiced and leave a wonderful zing without burning up your palate. There is a choice of varied sauces too, including Chipotle Mayo, Herbed Yoghurt, Mint and Chilli Aioli, Honey Chilli
Aioli, Queso (cheese sauce) and Baja (smoked bell peppers pureed with onions, garlic and more).
The dessert section includes Mexican classics like Chocolate Chilli Mousse and the house specialty – Tres Leches (three milk cake). This one’s essentially a sponge cake soaked with three different kinds of milk – condensed, evaporated and cream – and topped with whipped cream.
