Riding high on the success of the Gurgaon and Mumbai editions of Karen Anand’s Farmers Market, the Pune edition took off this week and saw some of the finest producers and suppliers of gourmet, organic and patisserie products, including restaurants, wineries and patisseries, display their wares at The Westin Pune Koregaon Park on Sunday, January 12. The event saw a huge turnout of youngsters, expats and families, who enjoyed the day with great food, exemplary live music and interesting products.

Stalls at the event included displays by seasoned players in the gourmet food sector like Godrej Nature’s Basket, along with small-time producers of organic products like wheatgrass powder and even natural cosmetics, for that matter. Speaking of cosmetics made from natural ingredients, our most interesting experience at the event was meeting the couple behind Shuddhi Therapy products, who said that they had never put any research into their products, because their formulae came to them during their meditation sessions.

We could go on and on about the premium cheeses, coffees (by The Indian Bean), fruit preserves and other delicious delights that tempted attendees at the event, but we would like to focus more on what we found most interesting – the food tour operators. We learnt of the website www.mealtango.com, for example, which specialized in organized tours that allow you to enjoy hearty, home-cooked meals at locations worldwide. All you need to do is visit the website, search for your desired location (e.g London, Budapest, Alibaugh, Goa and many other cities across the world), review the type of meal (options for India include army-style breakfast, spicy Kolhapuri dinner, Sindhi Surprise and more) and the host, and book the option that most interests you. Another venture, called The Western Routes, offered an Old City Food Walk, which allowed you to explore the heart of Pune through its food – typical, Maharashtrian-style meals and dishes.

The event was also every alcohol lover’s delight, because it had stalls from biggies like Absolut, Chandon, Sula Vineyards, Rio Wines and Reveilo Wines, among others. Moët Hennessey displayed its India-made sparkling wine Chandon Brut at the Farmers’s Market, while whisky aficionados delighted in The Vault’s exhibit, which included the award-winning Glencairn Whisky Glass and The Malt Whisky Year Book, which was on sale at the event.

Food stalls at the venue included those of Malaka Spice, which had a Farm To Fork pop-up store, using fresh poultry and produce from farms nearby in its preparations. Olive Bistro, Euriska, The Brooklyn Shuffle, Tim Luck Luck, Krusty’s, La Bouchée D’Or had their stalls at the venue too, offering a range of cuisines, from Mediterranean to American, Pan Asian and Indian. We must confess though, that we were quite disappointed to primarily see breads at the La Bouchée D’Or counter instead of their famously lavish desserts.
