Cocktail

The world has been quite cruel and unimaginative when describing Bollywood movies. Why? Because it has only ever used one term to describe them – masala. Yes, our very own Bollywood flicks are high on melodramatic masala, but come now. Get creative, please. Since creativity is sparse these days and we don’t want you to stress those gray cells much, we present you with this comparison – drawing parallels between Bollywood films and cocktails. Something upmarket to throw around during coffee table discussions about movies, like, “Wow, that movie was so totally Cosmopolitan.” (Ok, maybe you wouldn’t say something like that if you fear sounding completely loco).

Here are some of our favourite Bollywood cocktails!

Karan Johar – The Cosmopolitan

KJOCos

Let’s first talk about the toast of gossip town – Karan Johar. His movies are quite swish – foreign locations, candy floss romance, lots of fashion and emotion galore, glamourous women and hunky men. In short, they are every fashionista’s dream come true on celluloid. Hence, KJo movies are so like the Cosmopolitan – all la-di-dah and popular with the swish set that enjoy his movies as much as Sex And The City for its aesthetics – girly and OTT.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali – Beautiful-hued Tequila Sunrise

RamTS

If you like your movies to be high on melodrama, but also a spectacle worth admiring for astoundingly beautiful sets, you obviously gravitate towards Sanjay Leela Bhansali movies. His films are a visual treat, with bright, beautiful colours and grand emotions bursting forth – just like the Tequila Sunrise that looks beautiful with its deep passion-red colour at the bottom that fades into a happy yellow at the top. And each colour is vivid and distinct – just like the colours in an SLB movie.

Anurag Kashyap – Bloody Mary Mayhem

AnuGan

Ok, so has it been too candy flossy for you this far? Do you veer more towards darker themes a la Anurag Kashyap? Then you have a taste for a strong shot to the head. Kashyap’s movies are most definitely the Bloody Marys of B-Town. Intense flavouring, ranging from the spicy to the slightly pungent, depending on how it is prepared, the Bloody Mary embodies Anurag Kashyap flicks – extreme and not universally accepted or loved, but incredibly potent.

Yash Raj Films –Mojito Freshness

YRFMo

Then there is a whole different genre of Bollywood – The Yash Raj movie. These films are a unique brand, no matter who directs them. They’re quintessentially Indian at heart but with global production values. Much like the Mojito, really. The cocktail is big on mint – something found and loved in every Indian household, the taste of which overpowers the drink despite all the different liquors it also contains.

Salman Khan – Packing A Rum Punch

JaiHo

And then there is the man with the elephantine star power – Salman Khan – who takes off his shirt just before punching the lights out of the villain and then turns all sweet, charming the ladies. Salman Khan is the Rum Punch of Bollywood – desi and awesome. The Rum Punch is said to have originated in India and introduced to the world by the British. The word Punch originally stemmed from the Hindi word panch meaning five, referring to five ingredients it must constitute – lemon, sugar, water, tea/ spices and alcohol.
