Arijit Singh takes the stage

As the audience waited with great anticipation for their beloved singer to take the stage, Rooh – The Band, a Sufi-rock outfit, regaled them with some Sufi songs that included Mitwa from Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, Teri Deewani by Kailash Kher and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s Tere Bin Nahi Lagda Dil Mera. When the singer finally took the stage, he started off with a fast-paced rendition of Tum Hi Ho, maintaining the tempo with a rock version of Phir Mohabbat from Murder 2. These songs were followed by the melodious Phir Le Aaya Dil from Barfi!, Raabta from Agent Vinod, Suno Na Sangemarmar from Youngistaan, Jo Bheji Thi Dua from Shanghai and Milne Hai Mujhse Aayi from Ashiqui 2. A testament to the singer’s all-round appeal was the fact that the audience comprised of as many teenagers and youngsters as families.

After a few solos, Arijit was joined by Shruti Pathak and they sang numerous duets like Chahun Main Ya Naa, Kabira (the highlight of the evening) and others. Besides his own songs, he also covered Yaariyan from Cocktail, accompanied by Mohan Kanan, who originally sang it. Other pleasant surprises of the evening were old songs like Pehla Nasha from Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander, KK’s Yaaron and Jo Waada Kiya Who Nibhaana Padega from Taj Mahal, which followed Phir Le Aaya Dil.

The crowd was upbeat throughout the performance with Arijit prompting them from time to time by stating that the lack of loud cheer “really scares me”. The most enthusiastic response from the audience came during Kabira, when they were up in their seats, singing aloud and recording the memory on their cellphones. The evening came a full circle, closing just as it had begun, with Tum Hi Ho. Although this time around, Arijit was at his soulful best, as the audience sang along, bidding him a musical goodbye.
